What is your typical day like?

Most event planners agree that there’s no such thing as a typical day.

I wake up as early as 4:30 am, say my prayers, and then house chores begin. From 7:30 am, I’m checking and responding to emails.

A day in the office means a lot of hours online and on the phone with vendors and clients. Days of lecturing, I lecture students for event management classes. I spend a lot of time sourcing out contracts, finalizing event schedules, creating floor plans, researching and choosing event locations, negotiating agreements with suppliers, and creating budgets.

How did you get started in the industry?

I didn’t start out as a wedding planner. In fact, I studied History and Diplomatic Studies. I discovered that I had an eye for creating table décor and room settings; I had a true flair for colors, patterns, and design. I decided to become a pro.

I started my business because I love weddings and have a passion for planning weddings and events. I have planned and coordinated several weddings and events. I have such a passion for helping people bring together a vision, seeing it through to the end, and being able to sit back and see the joy, laughter, and love it brings. My experience, organizational skills, attention to detail, creativity, and ability to manage situations earned me the name, “the fairy godmother”.

I have several wedding and event planning certifications. I attend regular seminars and event planner conferences and do research to stay up to date on current trends.

What inspires you?

I find my biggest inspiration is absolutely from my clients’ personalities. Every wedding is so different and it’s been incredible working with such creative and unique people.

What are your favorite online resources for your business?

My favorite online resources for my business practice is the Planner’s Lounge, Bella Naija, Black Bride, Coordinated Bride, and Chic Brown Bride.

Chioma, thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and a day in your life.
